A Study on Activities of Daily Living and Active Life Expectancy for Korean Elderly

Abstract
The goal study was to maeasure the activities of daily living and active life expectancy for Korean elderly.
For this study, the 1995 life table and 1995 national health survey data conducted by Korean Institute of Health and Social Affairs were utilized. The number of sample was 2,823 persons of 60 years of age or older.
I assessed the physic function status of the elderly by indoor and outdoor activities of daily living.
The concept of outdoor activities involves limitations in one¢¥s ability to carry out functions such as shopping, domestic chores, transferring by bus or train. Using data sets of ability to perform outdoor activities and Sullivan¢¥s methodological techniques, I calculated active life expectancies for the elderly.
1. The Percent of outdoor activities restriction of the female elderly was much higher than of the male elderly and the percent of outdoor activities restriction of urban elderly was higher than that of rural elderly.
2. For the indoor and outdoor activities restriction, The percent of activities restriction for the elderly who self-rated status was no good was higher than that of the other group. And The percent of activities restriction for the elderly who had ever been hospitalized was higher than that of the other group.
3. Active life expectancy of the male elderly aged 60 to 64 was 14.92 year, while life expectancy of the female elderly aged 60 to 64 was 17.83 years, while their life expectancy was 21.0 years.
